There are a few national rating organizations that monitor the health of insurance companies. Do coverages, premiums and customer service vary from corporation to company? Why does an insurance company charge one person less than another person with the same coverages? Deciding on the best insurance carrier for you is an important financial decision. Will your insurance company be around when it is time to file a claim? If an company can not pay claims or benefits then other issues become much less important. Financial strength ratings are an analysis of a multitude of risks that could impact an insurance company’s long-term stability. Insurance providers have failed or ceased to operate because of insufficient financial strength, competitive forces, or evolving dynamics in the marketplace.

One rating agency to monitor a companies health is Standard & Poor’s (www.standardandpoors.com). This organization monitors the financial strength of each company and provides a multitude of other information that will help you determine if the company will be around in the future. It profile thousands of companies. Another organization that monitors insurance companies is Fitch Ratings (www.fitchratings.com). It continually checks the health and solvency of numerous insurance carriers. For example, I see that Fitch Ratings downgraded BP because of the recent Gulf Oil Spill.

If you are on the hunt for insurance ask your family and friends their experiences with their insurance company. Does the insurance company have a reputation? If you do get a referral from a friend ask them if they have ever filed a claim. If so, how quickly and easily was the claim processed? Was it a huge headache to get it done? I had a car accident a few years ago and the insurance company of the party at fault handled the claim quickly, professionally and easily. Are claims handled in house or are they outsourced? These are all questions that you should at least explore. Being insured by a company that handles claims poorly or not at all can be one giant headache.

The whole point of auto insurance is to pay you in case of an accident with injury or property damage. Insurance is designed to protect the assets you have acquired and protect you from lawsuits and liability. It is important to be insured by a reputable company that provides peace of mind. The last thing you want to worry about is whether your insurance company is going to default or not pay claims. The financial wellness of an car insurance company is frequently overlooked or forgotten about when people shop for coverage. Usually people only focus on rates and coverages. While rates and coverages are extremely important you should check Standard and Poor’s Ratings and/or Fitch Ratings to check the strength of the company. What good are rates and coverages if filing a claim is an enormous headache or if they do not pay?

Evaluating an insurance company ratings is very important. They usually issue a quarterly report that is provided to the public. The past is does not always determine the future however past performance is will provide important insight into what expectation to have for your long term protection. A factor often looked at to determine solvency and a companies ratings is how long they have been in operation. Be careful buying insurance from a company that has not been in business for some time. It is usually always safer to go with a company that has a history of good performance, solvency and great customer service.

Do you know anything about the company that you are considering? It is pretty simple to find out more about reputation. Search the internet, ask your family and friends and talk to the Better Business Bureau. You might just hear something valuable from these sources that may help you decide on whether to use them or not. In addition, every state has a Department of Insurance that maintains public details about insurance carriers. Use all the resources you can to find out which business is most effective for you.

Visit Tampa Car Insurance Agents to see numerous agents in the Tampa, Florida area. You can rate them or write comments about their services.

Have you ever attempted to chat to someone on the telephone and watch TV concurrently? All of us do this on a daily basis but when you think about it could you truly follow the TV show as well as the conversation flawlessly at the same time? You can’t pay your undivided attention to one thing if you’re doing several things at the same time. So if chatting on the telephone and viewing television is difficult to do at the same time what do you think your odds are when you chat on your cell phone while driving a car? This article will tell more about the dangerous combination of cell phones and driving:

Driving a Car and Talking on the Cell Phone

If you think it’s risk-free to drive while chatting on your cell phone, then you have dialed the wrong number. Cell phone users are four times as likely to be involved in a serious auto crash.

Various studies correlate serious vehicular accident injuries with talking on the phone. The results additionally demonstrate that the same risks are posed regardless of whether holding a phone to your ear or talking via a hands-free gadget, such as a speaker phone. These reports furthermore indicate that speaking, not holding the phone is the more distracting activity.

The danger is not associated with gender, age, or form of apparatus either. Male and female drivers go through the same increase in risk from using a phone while driving a car. So do drivers older and younger than 30 and drivers using hand-held and hands-free phones.

No matter whether you are using a normal cell phone or hands-free equipment, the risks present. Drivers should not use cell phones while driving. The risk are significant. If you are using a cell phone while driving, you’re placing yourself and everybody inside your vehicle in danger. You are furthermore endangering the lives of other motorists.

If you want to use your cell phone when driving, stop your vehicle on the side of the road and make your call. You can also wait until you reach your destination. It’s always a good idea to steer clear of multi-tasking whenever behind the wheel. Driving safely demands full concentration. Driving a car is an exceptionally complex process. Monitoring what is going on around you is hard enough without distractions.

Inattentive driving also is a subject of interest to United State’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in Washington, D.C. For years, the us government has been very worried about inattentive driving. Cell phone use is just one of the many distractions that may lead to deadly car crashes. Other major distractions are: fiddling with CDs, talking to passengers, changing stations on the car radio, consuming food or drinking coffee, and looking back at youngsters in the backseat.

The primary job of any driver is to safely operate the vehicle, without losing focus. Certainly there are advantages in having a cell phone available in an emergency, but it should not be applied indiscriminately. It doesn’t matter if it is hands-held or hands free. It’s nevertheless a serious distraction, and can be used sensibly by motorists. Drivers must concentrate on the activity they have at hand. They should not be engaged in alternative activities, such as talking on the cell phone, holding the dog, reading a newspaper or any other activity that distracts a driver from his or her primary goal of conducting the vehicle and its passengers to the destination safely. These kinds of disruptions tend to slow down driver response time. On the road, hazards can come up swiftly and unexpectedly. People have to be responsible when behind the wheel.

There are specific guidelines that must be followed while driving and taking a call while driving is totally prohibited, because you lose your concentration, but still I see a lot of drivers using Bluetooth’s and head phones, with their cell phones while operating their cars.

Chalk up another dubious distinction for the Sunshine State. Florida now leads the nation when it comes to auto insurance fraud.

While it’s not a new problem in the state it has become worse as residents struggle with the recession and high unemployment. The most common scams involve owners dumping their vehicles in canals because they can no longer afford to pay their bills.

More recently rings began staging accidents so they could bill insurance companies for millions of dollars in bogus claims. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, from 2007 to 2009 there were 511 staged accidents in Miami, 562 in Tampa and 422 in Orlando. The NICB adds that nearly one out of every four phony car accidents in the U.S. came out of Florida.

Staged accidents have become such a problem that the NICB has videos on its website to expose how these carefully choreographed scams work.

The financial losses to the insurance companies have been tremendous and the problem is reportedly getting worse.

There have been more than two dozen arrests statewide this year alone for scams involving phony accidents and no one expects this pace to slow down anytime soon.

The photo above shows 140 miles of Tampa, Florida roads via 130 cameras in the Florida Department of Transportation Traffic Management Center. These 60 video screens shows what is happening around on the roads around Tampa Bay. Is there a traffic jam on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge? Are there any crashes on Dale Mabry? is Traffic Management Center helps make life more manageable for thousands of motorists in Tampa Bay. In any given day the people watching these video screen can see people run out of gas, rear end crashes, head on collisions, people running red lights and a myriad of other things.

Three years ago $9 million was invested in installing these cameras around Tampa. Transportation officials say that these cameras are helping. They figure that the cameras are changing driver behaviors.

The Traffic Center updates electronic warning signs along Tampa roads. These warning signs gives drivers options. If the signs says that there is a traffic delay ahead then the drivers may taken an alternate route. It is saving drivers time and alleviating traffic.

Another great feature about the cameras are safety. Suppose you have a tire blow out at night. The employees in the traffic center can contact the Florida Highway Patrol to help you.

Roughly a dozen operators watch the video screens around the close, covering 140 miles of roads from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge to Pasco and Polk counties. They do it all from the SunGuide Center, a Florida Department of Transportation facility near Busch Gardens. Working 8 hour shifts, the operators have handled more than 110,000 calls of distress since the facility opened in July 2007.

They notify the Florida Highway Patrol, which has its own viewing facility one room over, and speak with road rangers in the field. They also update the electronic marquees along interstates. Still images are updated periodically online at fl511.com.

Safety and efficiency is the primary focus, though operators also see people jump off the Skyway, motorcyclists thrown and accidents involving children.

I was having breakfast with my mom last weekend at the Seahorse restaurant at Pass a Grill beach. On a side note, that is a great place to eat at for breakfast. Great water views and very affordable. See location below:

Anyway, during our conversation over breakfast my mom told me that she bought new car insurance. She was very excited because of the new savings. She was a customer of the Farm Bureau. Evidently, you have to be member of the Farm Bureau in order to buy insurance from them. Her yearly membership fee was somewhere around $60. That was what annoyed her the most.

I don’t think she priced many insurance companies out. She called Geico on their 800 number and have a feeling that was the only auto insurance company she contacted. Geico gave my mom a quote of about $240 less a year. Also, she does not have to pay the $60 membership fee to the Farm Bureau. So, her total savings were around $300 a year. Quite honestly I don’t know of her coverages are the same but I suspect they are.

One of the requirements of Geico was for my mom to get her car inspected by a Geico representative. Since Geico primarily works over the internet and telephone they rely on other companies to inspect cars for them. The first place my mom went to was an Enterprise rent a car. Unfortunately, the line was very long with only one person working and she waited 30 minutes and eventually left. Geico actually called my mom asking if everything worked out at Enterprise and she said no. So Geico told her to go to a Pep Boys retail store for the car inspection. She went over there and the guy inspecting the car did it within just a few minutes. It was very quick and painless.

She has been very happy with Geico’s service. They made a follow up call to her and she called them for clarification on something with her policy. So far she is very happy.

Benefits of Shopping For Tampa Car Insurance Online

The internet has changed the way people shop for auto insurance. People can now shop from the convenience of their home. People can now look online for insurance company reviews, get policy quotes and educate themselves on various insurance coverages.

The internet is a great tool for doing your research on Tampa car insurance. If you are planning on buying a new car you can do research on what insurance might be on the cars that you are considering. Some cars will have higher premiums than other cars. That is the beauty of the internet and having all of this information at your fingertips.

Even if you are not planning on buying a new car you can still shop around online to make sure that you are not overpaying on your current policy. Insurance company websites are very user friendly providing plenty of valuable information. Becoming a more informed car insurance shopper will help you decide on the right insurance company, and get a policy that meets your needs and fits your budget.

The negatives of working with an online insurance company might be lack of personal service. You will be dealing with someone on the telephone or via the internet. Sometimes it is nice to be able to walk into an office for more personal service.

Benefits of Using a Local Tampa Car Insurance Agent

There are several reasons to work with a local Tampa car insurance agent versus an online insurance company.

There is a benefit and some peace of mind knowing that you are working with someone locally and that your insurance questions will be answered by someone who knows your city.

It is nice to have a personal relationship with a local Tampa insurance agent. Instead of working with someone over the internet or on the telephone you can walk into your agents office to handle business. Instead of working with several different people for your insurance needs you can work with one or a couple.

If you do file a claim then you will have someone on your side to help you with the claim process.

A local insurance agent will understand the special risks and necessary coverages that are specific to the Tampa, Florida area. Things such as high crime areas, weather risks like hurricane and other local factors.

If you receive a ticket you are required to address it within 30 calendar days. How you can handle the citation will depend on your driving record. If your drivers license is in good standing you generally have three options:

1) Attend traffic school

2) Pay the penalty

3) Request a court appearance

Going to Tampa Traffic School

If you get a traffic citation and have the option of attending driving school then your insurance premiums can not go up and it also can not be canceled because of the infraction. If you complete a school approved by the state of Florida and submit your proof of completion to the Hillsborough Clerk of Court by the specified deadline then adjudication is withheld. This means that you are not considered guilty and you received no points.

State of Florida Policy for Electing Traffic School

Florida Statute 626.9541(1)(o) 12 States: “No insurer shall impose or request an additional premium, cancel a policy, or issue a non renewal notice on any insurance policy or contract because of any traffic infraction when adjudication of guilt is withheld and no points have been accessed pursuant to s.318.14(9) and (10). However, this subparagraph does not apply to traffic infractions involving accidents in which the insurer has incurred a loss due to the fault of the insured.”

Pay the Penalty

If you decide not to attend driving school and just pay the penalty then points will applied against your drivers license when applicable and your Tampa car insurance may go up or even could possibly be canceled.

Go to Tampa Traffic Fines to view the cost of various traffic infractions in the county of Hillsborough.

If you pay the full fine points will be applied against your drivers license when applicable and your auto insurance rates may go up or your policy may be cancelled.

Request a Court Appearance

Instead of paying the fine or attending driving school you can request a court appearance for the violation. In Court you could determined innocent or if the court determines that you committed the infraction then the Court may adjudicate you guilt, assess points against your drivers license, impose a civil penalty not to exceed $500 ($1,000 for infractions involving a death or speeding in school/construction zones). Court can also require you to attend a state approved traffic school or all of the above. To add insult to injury your insurance company can raise your rates or even cancel your policy.

Looking for tips to lowering your Tampa auto insurance? Your insurance premiums depends on several variables. Some of them are the vehicle you are driving, your age, driving records, marital status and the city you live in. Here are some way to lower your car insurance:

The first and most obvious way to lower you car insurance is to simply ask your carrier for discounts. For instance, ask them of you can get a break since you have a burglar alarm or air bags. Also, ask them if they give discounts for people who do not drink or smoke. If you own a home ask the insurance company that writes your home owners policy if they offer car insurance. Many companies will offer a discount if they supply you with both home and car insurance.

Drive a safe car. The car you drive will determine how much you pay in insurance. You probably should not go buy a new car just to lower your insurance bill but if you are on the hunt for a new car then call your insurance company and give them a list of the cars you are considering. See what your insurance will be before you buy the car. A sports car might cost two to three times that of an average one.

You can always drive less to get a discount. If you drive less than 7,500 miles a year you might be up for a discount.

Be careful filing small insurance claims. Often times it us best to just pay for the repair out of your own pocket. If you file a claim your insurance premium could go up.

Do you drive an old clunker or something not that valuable? A rule of thumb is to drop your collision insurance when the annual premium reaches 10% of your car’s value. So if you collision coverage is a $100 a year and your car is worth around $1,000 you might consider dropping the coverage.

Raising your deductible will lower you tampa car insurance. Ask your insurance carrier how much you can save.

Shop around for insurance. Surprisingly there can be big differences between carriers. Make a few calls.

Did you get married or have some other status change? That can lower your rates. Insurance companies view you as less of a risk the older and more responsible you get.

Are you a student? Make good grade, get on the honor roll and your insurance company may give you a break.

Be responsible with your money and credit. If you have a good credit score you may get a break in your insurance. Be sure to ask your carrier as they may not bring it up.

Don’t get your car stolen. Be smart about where you park your car as well as making it secure.

Last but not least just drive safely. The best way to keep your insurance lower or get it lowered is to not get in accidents and get no traffic infractions. Avoid speeding and reckless driving.

Follow the tips above and you stand a good chance of lowering your auto insurance.

A car is stolen roughly every 32 seconds in the United States. Nearly 1,000,000 vehicles were stolen last year. Your car is definitely at risk of being stolen. Read preventing car theft for some tips on how to protect your car from being taken. If you live in an area with high crime or if you drive a car that is frequently stolen (read Florida’s most stolen cars) then maybe you need more than just an alarm to protect your car. You might consider a LoJack for protection.

The patented LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System includes a radio frequency transceiver hidden in your car. Each LoJack has a special code that is associated with your car’s VIN (vehicle identification number). If your car is stolen and reported to the authorities, the state police crime computer checks the LoJack System’s unique code against the state VIN database. This will activate the LoJack device in your car, which emits an inaudible signal. Police cars, planes and helicopters are equipped with LoJack Police Tracking Computers and are always listening for a LoJack signal. If heard they will track down the car and recover it.

Over 250,000 cars have been recovered since LoJack was released, 100,000 of them were recovered in the United States. So far, LoJack is responsible for helping authorities in recovering more than $5 billion in stolen assets. You insurance carrier might give you a discount if you have a LoJack on your car. Be sure to ask.

Expert car thieves can steal any vehicle if they are motivated. The National Insurance Crime Bureau suggests a layered approach to preventing your car from being stolen. The more layers you have protecting your car the less likely it is to be stolen. Here are the 4 layers:

Layer 1 – Common Sense

Obviously, you don’t want to leave your vehicle unlocked with the keys in the ignition. You are asking for trouble if you do that. Have some common sense when it comes to protecting your car.

Lock your doors and windows

Don’t leave the keys in the ignition

Park in a public, well-lit area

Layer 2 – Warning Device

The next layer of vehicle protection is a visible or audible device. The devices below could prevent a thief from attempting to steal your car. They can be powerful deterrents.

Audible alarms

Steering column collars

Steering wheel/Brake pedal lock

Brake locks

Wheel locks

Tire locks/Tire deflators

Theft deterrent decals

Identification markers in or on vehicle

Window etching

Laminated glass

Layer 3 – Immobilizing Device

This is a device which prevents a thief from bypassing your car’s ignition by hot-wiring it. Some electronic devices have computer chips in ignition keys. Other devices inhibit the flow of electricity or fuel to the engine until a hidden switch or button is activated.

Popular third layer devices include:

Smart keys

Fuse cut-offs

Kill switches

Starter, ignition and fuel disablers

Layer 4 – Tracking Device

If your car is stolen you can have a tracking device that emits a signal that alerts the cops or a monitoring station. These tracking devices are a tremendous help in recovering stolen vehicles. These tracking devices can use GPS technology to track the car and even cut it off.
